Indians are opting for freelancing more than ever and this trend has increased rapidly in the last 3-5 years. The presence of freelancers in India is so high that one in four freelancers across the world is from India. One field in which Indians have a vital presence is software as 50 percent of global freelancers working in software domain are Indians. All this information was shared by PayPal in a report. A survey was organized by the payments company in which 500 Indian freelancers were interviewed. It found that majority of Indian freelancers are less than 40 years of age and they have an annual mean income of INR 19,02,785. About 23 percent of these freelancers had an annual income of INR 40, 00, 001 to INR 45, 00, 000. It also mentioned that top three jobs were web or mobile development, web design and data entry & internet research. About 61 percent respondents admitted that they have faced issues in getting paid from domestic and international clients. Many of them also said that they get paid after invoicing for two or four weeks. Apart from income issues, freelancers also have to deal with problems like a competitive industry, tough customers, and isolation (17 percent). While some people might assume that all freelancers are choosing such a career option because they are lazy or lack commitment, the fact is the core reasons for this career path are lack of jobs in IT sector and a slowdown in hiring. Even startups are hiring conservatively Some of the reasons why freelancing is gaining popularity are people get to be their own bosses, they get the chance to pick the work they like best and there is a possibility of earning more than a regular job because they get to decide the amount they would charge for a service.
