The monsoon season is here and whilst it is the season of enjoying corn on the cob, fresh off the coals and getting drenched in the showers, this is also the time when your hair needs a lot more than just regular care. While monsoons are a relief from the hot summers, the rain water, combined with the existing pollution in the hair and the overall climate can wreak havoc on your hair. Many people notice a lot more hair loss during the monsoons and this is because the air is filled with humidity. The chemical structure of hair is such that it is extremely sensitive to the hydrogen that is present in the air. During the monsoons, the hair absorbs the hydrogen and creates bonds, which tend to swell up, making the hair frizzy. And when hair becomes frizzy, it can break much more easily.
However, there are simple things that you can do, which will make sure that your hair is strong and protected, no matter what the weather. These are some simple tips and tricks that you can follow during the monsoons, which will ensure that your hair behaves, just the way you want:
- Because your hair tends to get quite oily and sticky during the monsoons, you need to pay extra attention to your oiling regime. You still need to oil your hair, but don’t do it more than twice a week. Warming the oil before you massage it into your hair and scalp would be a good idea.
- There is nothing wrong in getting drenched in the rains – enjoy those showers and have fun frolicking in the rains, but once you are done, just remember to wash the rain water away. You need to make sure that you use a mild shampoo to wash away the rains. Ideally, you should shampoo your hair thrice a week during the monsoons, to make sure that your hair is clean.
- While your shampoo is important, your conditioner will be a lot more important and you need to choose wisely. You need to choose a rich conditioner will not just condition, but also protect your hair, in between washes. Use a wide toothed comb to spread the conditioner properly and rinse off with cold water.
- You would think that oiling and washing your hair properly would be more than enough, but how you dry your hair will prove to be just as important. You should switch to a microfiber towel, because it will absorb the water much faster and cause lesser friction. Keeping in mind such simple things could help you prevent undergoing a hair loss treatment, later on.
- During the monsoon months, your hair will take a lot longer to dry, which means that you might need to wait a little longer before you can tie them up or even comb them. Ideally, you should let your hair dry a little, before untangling your hair with your fingers. Use your comb only once your hair is almost dry; you could choose to blow dry your hair before using a comb and invest in a wide toothed comb.
- Another important mantra that you should keep in mind is never to share your combs, especially during the monsoons. This is a season when infections are actually floating around, which means that you could catch one, even though your comb. This is also the breeding season for lice and combs are generally the most common breeding grounds for the same. It would be a good idea to carry your own wide toothed comb with you at all times, so that there will be no need for sharing.
- How you treat you hair during your monsoons will play a huge role on how strong and healthy your hair remains. While getting soaked in the rains once in a while is fine, you will not want to do it regularly. This means that you will want to look into investing some hair accessories that will keep your looking stylish, while offering protection to your hair. This could be a scarf, a cap or better still, wear a raincoat that has an attached hat.
- While getting an intricate hairstyle for a special occasion is fine, on a day to day basis, it would make a lot more sense to keep your hair natural. Try to avoid too many styling tools and keep the chemical hair products at bay, as much as possible. Even keep your hairstyles on the simpler side – ponytails, braids and buns, because these will need minimal products and also keep your hair looking great. Or if you are willing to play around with your looks, this would be a great time to go for a shorter haircut.
- Your diet will also play an important role in how your hair behaves during the rains. While munching on fried foods and roasted corn might sound like the best thing to do during the rains, you do need to get some healthy food into your diet. You need to include fresh fruits, vegetables, particularly green leafy vegetables and plenty of whole grains. Eat plenty of sprouts, because they are rich in nutrients such as vitamin E, iron and potassium. You also need to include plenty of fluids, especially water, because hydration is extremely
- A great way to protect your hair during the summers is hair masks – there are plenty of hair masks that you can prepare at home, using ingredients that are easily accessible. The ingredients in these hair masks are meant to nourish the hair from within and also offer protection. In addition, these hair masks can also help reduce infections, itching and dryness of the scalp. Here are some of the easiest hair masks:
- Simply scrape out the pulp from a thick leaf of aloevera and apply it to the scalp and hair, before washing it off after about an hour or so.
- Eggs and oil work a treat for undernourished hair and the easiest way to use both is to apply an organic mayonnaise on your hair.
- A simple oil mask is a great choice – olive, almond, Vitamin E are all great choices and you could also use a combination of these oils to create a super oil, to nourish and hydrate your hair.
